How do these work best? Stuck straight in vertically or slanted? I am worried about tearing roots because they have to be stuck in soil over and over.

I am on the second week with these globes. I had one plant that needed water every 2 days because I was afraid to overwater since there is no drainage hole in the pot. It drooped on the 3rd day. It seems better now. The first week they worked OK for all plants and lasted 5 days. This second week I had to refill twice and will need to fill again today. Is it draining water down under the surface and leaving the top dry? How do I get consistant results? What about tearing roots?
